Autumn

Dear Parents

Welcome to a new school year. I hope this short newsletter will advise you on how you can support your child at home and in school. I hope that you will find this information useful.

This term our topic is 'Ourselves'. We will be learning about different parts of the body, the five senses etc.

Reading

In literacy we will be doing the letter and sounds programme to develop their phonetical skills. It is imperative for your child's development that you hear your child read at home as often as possible.
Each child should bring their reading book home daily, please sign the reading record book and make any necessary comments. It is very important that the reading book and record book is returned each day. We are also starting a paired reading session with Year 4. This is an excellent opportunity for the children to practise their reading skills.

Writing

Your child will have a spelling test take place every Friday. Please encourage your child to practise the spellings each night if possible.

Numeracy

This term we will concentrate on the following:-

·       Counting, properties of numbers and number sequences to 20.

·       Understanding + and -.

·       To know by heart addition facts for pairs of numbers to 10.

·       Money – addition to 10p/£10.

·       Measure – comparing length.

·       Shape and space – recognising and renaming 3D shapes – properties of 3D shapes.  However if you could bring maths into everyday life it would be really beneficial for them. For example looking for different number buses. Encouraging them to handle money when shopping, counting peas on a plate etc.

P.E.

P.E. in year 1 is on Monday and Thursday. The Thursday session will be football with Premier Soccer so your child will need jogging bottoms and a warm top. Please send P.E. bags to school with the following:- shorts, T-shirt and either plimsolls or trainers. Please name all items of children’s clothing, it is very difficult to find unnamed lost items of clothing.

In the interest of a child’s safety, jewellery, including earrings, must not be worn during P.E./Games lessons. They should be removed on these days or surgical tape provided to cover them, which the child must put on themselves. Long hair should be tied back.

All school clothing including uniform, should be named.

I have an open door policy and am happy to see you at all times, however after school is better since I will have more time then.

Thank you in anticipation of your support. Please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Mr Bullock regarding any concerns you may have this term.

Look out for other letters which contain dates for Parents Evening, Achievement Assembly and Christmas Performances.
