Welcome to the autumn term and a new school year! This is a newsletter to provide you with some information about what we are studying in Year 3 and how you can help your child this term.
Numeracy
This term we are learning about the properties of numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, mental calculation strategies, money and shape. It would be a great help to your child to practise mental calculations and also their tables at home as we will be having times tables tests every Monday, with each child moving along at their own speed.
Literacy
This term we will be learning about stories with familiar settings, report writing and Adventure stories.
Your child has a reading book and Reading Record, which they should bring home every day. When you hear your child read, please write the date and a comment in their record book. There are new book review sheets which the children will complete at school and stick into their Reading Record after completing a reading book which helps them to demonstrate their understanding of what they have read.
We have a weekly spelling test in class 3, which will be taking place on a Monday morning starting Monday 13th September (your child should have brought home all their spellings for the term. They have been put into ability groups but these are flexible and may be changed.).
Homework
Homework tasks will be given out as appropriate, usually on a Monday, to reinforce learning done in school. Homework should be handed in by Friday unless the children are told otherwise.
PE
PE is on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. A qualified coach is taking the children for the Thursday lesson, following the school’s PE curriculum. Please ensure that your child has suitable clothing for outdoor and indoor PE, with a change of footwear, as trainers cannot be worn in school if they have been used for PE. Earrings need to be removed or taped up for all PE lessons and long hair needs to be tied back.
Art
We shall be working with a variety of media over the year and linking art activities in with our other foundation subjects. I have a collection of aprons in the classroom for children to use but if you’d prefer feel free to supply your own (please name everything clearly!).
History.
We will be studying the Ancient Egyptians in history this term, looking at Hieroglyphics, Farming, Key Events, Gods & the Afterlife and Pyramids.
Science
Our Science topics this term are Rocks & Soils and Characteristics of Materials.
French
The children will start having French lessons this term, with the emphasis on speaking and listening. We will be learning how to introduce ourselves, count to 10, and follow basic classroom instructions, as well as learning about French customs and France as a country.
Finally, if you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me through the school office or directly at the end of the school day. Thank you,
Miss N Harvey
