Physical Education

Our ethos

At Fordham we strive to make physical education both enjoyable and accessible to all. We hope all children have a good understanding of physical literacy and know how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

Curriculum

We deliver a progressive, engaging and varied curriculum. We are committed to giving each child at least two hours of high-quality PE per week. This is structured into one hour of Real PE focussing on developing the fundamental skills that are vital for physical development and a one-hour games lesson to apply these skills and use them in a wide variety of sports including tag rugby, football, dance, gymnastics, athletics and many more.

Extra-curricular opportunities

We offer a huge range of extra-curricular opportunities to enhance what is offered to children in lessons. Throughout the academic year, we organise a wide range of before school, lunchtime and after school clubs as well as SEND specific interventions. Another area of focus is giving our children the chance to represent the school in a variety of different festivals and competitions. We have built strong links with local sports partnerships and other organisations, in the community, to ensure that we access a huge range of opportunities for our children which can have so many positive outcomes.

PE & school sport premium funding

Each academic year we are allocated a sum of money from the government which should be spent in the following areas.

  • support all children and young people to live healthy, active lives
  • make participation in PE and school sport easier
  • make sure all children can achieve and thrive through increased physical activity and sport, no matter their background or ability
  • improve children’s health, wellbeing, personal development and academic attainment
  • embed the foundations of positive and enjoyable participation in regular physical activity.

Please see the link below for our report on how this money was spent during the last academic year and the impact of the spending.

PE and Sports Premium

Swimming

Primary school swimming requirements in England, mandate that all students learn to swim competently (25m+), use effective strokes (front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke), and perform self-rescue by the end of Key Stage 2, making it a mandatory part of PE, with schools required to report on attainment.

Each year in the summer term all year 5 children take part in swimming lessons for a period of 6 weeks. These take place at either The Hive Leisure Centre in Ely or Mildenhall Hub Leisure Centre. Any children who do not meet the outlined criteria will have the opportunity to repeat this process in year 6.

See below for our report from the last academic year.

AWARDS

In December 2025, we were awarded a quality mark (with distinction) by the Association for Physical Education.

The afPE Quality Mark is a prestigious award that will evidence the strength and quality of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) in your school. It will raise the profile of the subject and the school, both locally and nationally, and will promote the outstanding work that is being undertaken on a daily basis.

We will retain this award until December 2028 before needing to re-apply.

In September 2024, we were awarded a Platinum School Games Mark.

The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme. It celebrates schools' commitment to developing competitive sport within their school and community. It allows schools to assess their PE provision and create an action plan for improvement.

The platinum award is the highest possible award that can be achieved and it represents outstanding provision in line with the school games values and a continued commitment to the growth of all areas of PE and school sport.

We will retain this award until July 2026 before needing to re-apply.
